2007 New Orleans Service Travel
Lured by tales from the inaugural trip, GBB doubled in size and took 85 people to NOLA to continue the work that was started a year prior.
Over half of the previous year’s participants returned and joined many rookies for a fantastic year.
Committees of volunteers organized the full week - coordinating hotel, transportation, R&R activities, the worksite, fashionable t-shirts, and meals.
Trip highlights were…….
- A local real estate company hosted our Sunday night team dinner, a great start for the week!
- Meeting people that had moved into the homes we helped to build in ’06 and having them play lunch concerts for us.
- Friday’s formal front wall raising ceremony. We worked on 6 houses all week. Starting from the floor and putting up the framework for the house. On Friday morning New Orleans and Habitat VIP’s, the families that would move into these houses, over 100 total volunteers, and numerous other guests joined us as we raised the front wall of all 6 houses.
- Many of the future homeowners were able to work on houses this year. Working side-by-side with the homeowners was a rewarding experience.
- Enjoying snow cones donated and made by a local teenager everyday at lunch.
- Discovery of local restaurants, including Port-of-Call, a must-go local hamburger joint.
- The group went to Preservation Hall to enjoy some great Jazz.
